Mingwei Li, Bingxue Shao, Zhuo Li

ABSTRACT: Given the transformation of the tourism consumption market, it is important to understand the coupling and coordinated development relationship between tourism and the high-speed railway (HSR) system for industrial transformation and upgrading and the improvement of coordinated development. To explore the level of coupling and coordinated development of HSR and tourism industry, using the section data of 153 cities on Chinas HSR trunk lines and their branches in 2018, the coupling coordination relationship between HSR and the tourism industry was clarified by the coupling coordination model. Results show that the disharmony between Chinas HSR and the tourism industry is serious, especially in the less-developed central and western areas. The areas of high coupling coordination are concentrated in economically developed cities, decreasing from east to west, with a generally low development level in the northwest region. The coupling coordination relationships in the central, eastern, and western regions show a certain spatial agglomeration effect influenced by the national macro policy and regional development strategy. The coupling coordinated development is also affected by factors including regional economic strength, the scale of the tourism industry, and the tourism reception industry level Conclusions provide policy recommendations for promoting quality tourism development
