Using Web Mining Technologies to Improve Competitive Intelligence Capabilities: A Historical Perspective

ABSTRACT. In the last years due to the spectacular development of the Web, the studies noted that an exponential increase was realized at the level of the amount of information existing on the web (web content), at the level of accessing available data (web usage), and at the level of the existing relationships between web pages where existing these data (Web structure). In the same time, the value and importance of the knowledge provided by competitive intelligence in order to increase competitive advantage and organizational performances is recognized and emphasized in an increasing number of articles and studies.
This paper will present: (a) an overview of the web mining; (b) a literature review regarding competitive intelligence (CI) and the objectives of using (CI) in organizations; (c) possibilities of using web mining technologies in order to improve the competitive intelligence capabilities.
